Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Perhaps partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin mercurialitas ; mercurial adj., -ity suffix.
Etymology: Originally < post-classical Latin mercurialitas (a1490 in Ripley: see quot. a1550 at sense 1) < classical Latin mercuriālis mercurial adj. (in its post-classical Latin sense ‘of metallic mercury’) + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). In sense 2 perhaps independently < mercurial adj. + -ity suffix.
