Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Probably partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French mercurique ; mercury n., -ic suffix.
Etymology: In sense 1 < French mercurique (1787) < mercure (see mercury n.) + -ique -ic suffix. In later use, probably independently < mercury n. + -ic suffix.
Chemistry.
1. That contains mercury. Only in mercuric acid n. a supposed compound representing a saturated combination of mercury and oxygen. Obsolete.
