Etymology: < mercury n. + -o- connective + -chrome comb. form.
Chiefly U.S. Pharmacology.
Originally: any of several mercury-containing dyes developed as possible antiseptics or antibiotics (see quot. 1919). Later (also Mercurochrome): spec. the compound merbromin, used chiefly as an antiseptic for the skin.The ‘mercurochrome-220’ of Young et al. (see quot. 1919) was merbromin.A proprietary name in the United States.
