Etymology: < Italian merenda (14th cent.) < classical Latin merenda light afternoon meal, such a meal given to labourers as part of their wage, use as noun of feminine singular of merendus , gerundive of merēre to earn, deserve (see merit n., and compare -end suffix2).Compare merienda n., and also isolated borrowing of the cognate Portuguese merenda (a1230):1787 W. Beckford Portuguese Jrnl. 27 June (1954) 107 A merenda or collation of preserved fruits, comfits and conserves of every sort and colour.
In Italian-speaking contexts: a light meal, esp. one taken in the afternoon.
