Etymology: < classical Latin merīdiālis < merīdiēs midday, south (see meridian adj.) + -ālis -al suffix1. Compare meridian adj. and meridional adj. In sense 3 perhaps formed independently as alteration of meridian adj. with suffix substitution (see -al suffix1).With meridial line (in quot. 1942 at sense 3) compare meridian line n. at meridian adj. Compounds and meridional line n. at meridional adj. and n. Compounds. With meridial plane (in quot. 1980 at sense 3) compare meridian plane in quot. 1956 at meridian adj. 2a.
