Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek μεταβλητικός.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μεταβλητικός able to produce change, subject to change, for exchange (see below) < μετα- meta- prefix + -βλητικός ( < βλητός , verbal adjective corresponding to βάλλειν to throw (see etymological note s.v. ballista n.) + -ικός -ic suffix), after μεταβάλλειν to change, (in the middle voice) to exchange (see metabole n.). In sense 2 after Dutch metabletisch (1963 in the title of J. H. van den Berg Leven in meervoud: een metabletisch onderzoek); compare earlier metabletics n.In sense 1 interpreting Politics 1257a9, where Aristotle contrasts uses of an object proper to itself with its use solely to accrue wealth. Aristotle is not entirely consistent in his use of the terms μεταβλητικός and χρηματιστικός ‘relating to the acquisition of wealth’ (see chrematistic adj. and n.), and uses the former to denote both exchange in general and exchange for profit (see 1258b21).
