Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: meta- prefix, Greek χρῶσις.
Etymology: < meta- prefix + Hellenistic Greek χρῶσις colouring < the stem of ancient Greek χρῶμα colour (see chrome n.) + -σις -sis suffix.
Zoology.
In animals which possess chromatophores (esp. certain lizards, frogs, fish, and cephalopod molluscs): the ability to change skin colour.
