Etymology: Shortened < metempirics n., by analogy with metaphysic n.1 and metaphysics n. In sense 2 probably after empiric n. Compare slightly earlier metempirical adj., metempiricist n., metempiricism n. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (metempi·rik) /mɛtɛmˈpɪrɪk/.
Philosophy. Obsolete. rare.
1. The philosophy of things that lie beyond what is verifiable by experience; = metempirics n. Also: a philosophical account or theory of such things, a metaphysical system.
