Etymology: < meta- prefix + empirical adj. and n.; coined by G. H. Lewes (see quots. 1873 at main sense, 1874 at main sense).Lewes coined a group of related words in the early 1870s (see also metempirics n., metempiricist n.); he also coined French métempirique (see metempiric adj.). The usual form is now meta-empirical.
Chiefly Philosophy.
Relating to matters beyond the range of empirical knowledge, metaphysical; (occasionally) affirming the validity of concepts or beliefs not based on experience. Also as n.
