Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Meristem.
Etymology: < German Meristem (C. Nägeli Beiträge zur wissensch. Bot. I. (1858) 2) < ancient Greek μεριστός divided, divisible (see meristic adj.) + German -em-em suffix. Compare French méristème (1874 in a translation from German).
Botany.
Plant tissue consisting of cells which are actively dividing and giving rise to new cells; a region composed of such tissue, occurring esp. at the tip of a root or shoot.primordial meristem: see primordial meristem n. at primordial adj. and n. Compounds.
