Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French merlet; French merlette.
Etymology: Partly < Anglo-Norman merlet (mid 14th cent.) < merle merle n.1 + -et -et suffix1, and partly < Middle French merlette (late 14th cent.) < merle merle n.1 + -ette -ette suffix. Compare later marlet n., and martlet n.2 and note at that entry.
Heraldry.
A representation of a bird with neither feet nor beak. Cf. martlet n.2 2.More lectis in quot. c1425 may be interpreted as a possible transmission error for merelettis.
