单词 | merlin |
释义 | merlinn.1 A small falcon, Falco columbarius, of North America and northern Eurasia, with pale brown streaked underparts, a barred tail, and a back which is slate blue (in the male) or dark brown (in the female). Formerly: spec. Falco columbarius aesalon, the subspecies found in Britain (cf. pigeon hawk n.).In the 17th cent. some writers regarded the name as properly denoting the female bird, the male being distinguished as jack-merlin (see Jack n.2 34a, Compounds 3a). In the late 19th cent. some ornithologists used the name for members of a subgroup of the genus Falco which included the merlin proper and the red-headed falcon, F. chicquera, both of which consist of several subspecies (formerly regarded as separate species).
