单词 metif
释义

metifn.

Forms: 1800s maitiff, 1800s metiff, 1800s metif, 1800s métif.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French métif.
Etymology: < French métif person with parents of different races (1740; 1701 in form mestif ), use as noun of Middle French mestif , French métif , variant (with suffix substitution) of Middle French mestis , French métis (see metis n.).The pronunciation of this word has varied considerably. Early evidence implies a degree of naturalization: the spelling in quot. 1805 suggests a pronunciation /ˈmeɪtɪf/, while Webster (1886) and Cent. Dict. (1890) give the pronunciation /ˈmiːtɪf/. N.E.D. (1906) gives two naturalized variants, (mēi·tif, mī·tif) /ˈmeɪtɪf/ /ˈmiːtɪf/ and the explicitly non-naturalized (‖metif) /metif/. Later evidence suggests that the word was regarded as not fully naturalized, and was therefore stressed on the second syllable, but since no 20th-cent. examples have been found outside dictionaries, it is difficult to be certain.
Obsolete. Originally and chiefly North American.
A person with having mixed white and American Indian parentage. Also more generally: a person with parents of different ethnic origin. Cf. metis n. 1.
