Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Metonicus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Metonicus (1630 in Alsted Encycl.) < classical Latin Metōn (ancient Greek Μέτων ), the name of the 5th cent. b.c. Cicero uses classical Latin Metōnis annus ‘Meton's year’ figuratively to denote an indefinitely long period of time.

Metonic cycle n. the cycle of 19 tropical years (conventionally equated to 235 synodic months) in which the moon returns to almost the same apparent position relative to the sun, so that new and full moons occur at the same dates in the corresponding year of each cycle. Also †Metonic period, †Metonic year. This cycle was widely adopted in eastern lunisolar calendars, and was the basis of the early Christian calculation of the date of Easter.
