Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French matagraboliser.
Etymology: < Middle French, French matagraboliser (1534 in Rabelais) < ancient Greek μάταιος vain (see mataeology n.) + Middle French -graboliser < grabeler to sift (1439; later used figuratively in sense ‘to examine closely’ (1546 in Rabelais); < Middle French grabel (1439) sieve, perhaps < Catalan garbell (13th cent.) or Italian garbello (1438), both < Arabic ġirbāl < post-classical Latin cribellum (probably 5th cent.) < classical Latin cribrum sieve (see cribrose adj.) + -ellum -ellum suffix) + -iser -ize suffix; compare garble v. Compare metagrobolism n.English forms in met- are probably after French metagraboulizer (Cotgrave, 1611).
