单词 microbiology
释义

microbiologyn.

Brit. /ˌmʌɪkrə(ʊ)bʌɪˈɒlədʒi/, U.S. /ˈˌmaɪkroʊˌbaɪˈɑlədʒi/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: micro- comb. form, biology n.
Etymology: < micro- comb. form + biology n. Compare French microbiologie (1883).P. Wright observes ( Lang. Brit. Industry (1974) iv. 44) that ‘the first i of microbiology is said both short and long’, but makes no attempt to characterize the distribution of the two pronunciations. A monophthongal pronunciation in the first syllable does not appear to be attested elsewhere for this word, but compare note on pronunciation s.v. micro- comb. form.
Biology.
