Origin: A borrowing from Portuguese. Etymon: Portuguese açaí.
Etymology: < Portuguese açaí (1763 as assaí, c1767 as açay) < Nheêngatú asaí (also uasaí).Nheêngatú is a Tupi–Guarani language used as a lingua franca in the Amazonian region.
Any of various palms of the South American genus Euterpe, often used as a source of palm hearts (in full açai palm). Also: the small blackish-purple fruit of any of these trees (esp. E. oleracea), an edible berry used chiefly for its juice (more fully açai berry) .
