Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin mimmulus.
Etymology: < supposed classical Latin mimmulus, former reading in the text of Pliny Nat. Hist. 18. 259 for the name of a weed of meadowland; the reading now preferred is nummulus (see nummular adj.). N.E.D. (1906) enters this under mimulus and gives the pronunciation as (mi·miŭlɒ̆s) /ˈmɪmjʊləs/.
Obsolete.
A weed of meadows mentioned by Pliny, identified as some kind of yellow rattle (genus Rhinanthus) or as either of the red rattles, Pedicularis sylvatica and P. palustris.

1633 T. Johnson Gerard's Herball (new ed.) ii. cdxxxvii. 1071 It [sc. Yellow Rattle] groweth in drie medowes and pastures, and is to them a great annoiance... Some thinke it to be the Mimmulus: or as others (& that more fitly) reade it, Nummulus, mentioned by Pliny, lib. 18. cap. 28.

1794 Bot. Mag. 8 283 Mimmulus is a classical word for the Pedicularis, or Lousewort.
