Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mimose.
Etymology: < French mimose (attributed to R. J. Haüy by A. Brongniart 1813, in Jrnl. des mines 34 46) < mime mime n.1 (in the sense ‘imitator, mimic’, because it sometimes resembles diorite) or its ultimate etymon ancient Greek μῖμος mime n.1 + -ose , ending of mineral names (compare orthose n.).
Geology. Now historical.
A uniformly greyish coloured rock composed of compact feldspar and pyroxene.

1823 Jrnl. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia 3 114 A granite mixture of lamellar Feldspar, and the same lamellar Pyroxene,..belongs to those rocks which are called Dolerite or Mimose.

1937 A. Johannsen Descriptive Petrogr. Igneous Rocks III. 303 Haüy's term mimose probably covered the same rocks [sc. melabasalts].
