Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Mimusops.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Mimusops ( Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 349) < Byzantine Greek μιμοῦς , genitive of μιμώ monkey ( < ancient Greek μῖμος mime n.¹) + ancient Greek ὤψ face (see -ops comb. form).

A genus of tropical, mainly African, evergreen trees and shrubs of the family Sapotaceae, chiefly bearing white scented flowers. Also ( mimusops): the fruit of such a plant.
