Etymology: < Micronesia, the name of a group of small islands in the western region of the North Pacific, including the Caroline, Mariana, and Marshall Islands, Kiribati, and many smaller islands ( < ancient Greek μικρο- micro- comb. form + -nesia (in the name of Polynesia : see polynesia n.), with the intended sense ‘the region of small islands’) + -an suffix. Compare medieval Greek μικρόνησος small island. N.E.D. (1906) gives only the pronunciation (məikronī·ʃiăn) /maɪkrəʊˈniːʃ(ɪ)ən/.
