Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: micro- comb. form, -phyll comb. form.
Etymology: < micro- comb. form + -phyll comb. form. With sense 2, compare Danish mikrofyl (C. Raunkiaer 1917, in Bot. Tidsskr. 34 229). Compare earlier microphylline adj., microphyllous adj. Compare megaphyll n.
1. Botany. A type of (usually small) leaf having a single medial vein, characteristic of the lycophytes (clubmosses, spikemosses, and quillworts). Cf. megaphyll n. 1.
