Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Microtinae.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Microtinae, subfamily name ( G. S. Miller Genera & Subgenera Voles & Lemmings (1896) 8) < Microtus , genus name ( F. von Paula Schrank Fauna Boica (1798) 1 66) ( < micro- micro- comb. form + ancient Greek ὠτ- , οὖς ear: see oto- comb. form) + -inae -inae suffix (compare -ine suffix1).Although the subfamily name Microtinae was not validly published until 1896, the author of quot. 1895 at sense A. (C. H. Merriam) was a collaborator of G. S. Miller's and the editor of the series ( North American Fauna) in which Miller's monograph appeared, and so can be assumed to have known of the name in 1895.
