Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Greek μικτός , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μικτός, adjective corresponding to μιγνύναι , μειγνύναι to mix (see mixed adj.2) + -ic suffix, after German miktisch (O. Storch 1924, in Zool. Jahrb. (Anat. u. Ontogenie) 48 311), itself after apomiktisch (see apomictic adj.) and pseudomiktisch (1908 or earlier).
Biology.
Originally: designating females (of various species) that are capable of sexual reproduction (i.e. that are not obligately parthenogenetic). Later also: of, relating to, or involving mixis. Also (in extended use): of mixed parentage or descent (rare).
