Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French militarisme.
Etymology: < French militarisme exaggerated predominance of the military in a country (1815), the doctrine of those who favour the extension of the role of the military in society (1862) < militaire (see military adj. and n.) + -isme -ism suffix. Compare German Militarismus (19th cent., after French militarisme). Compare earlier militarist n.
1. Military attitudes or ideals, esp. the belief or policy that a country should maintain a strong military capability and be prepared to use it aggressively to defend or promote national interests. Also: a political condition characterized by the predominance of the military in government or administration or a reliance on military force in political or diplomatic matters.Frequently with derogatory connotations.
