Origin: A borrowing from Malay. Etymon: Malay Minangkabau.
Etymology: < Malay Minangkabau < Minangkabau Menangkabau, self-designation, lit. ‘the buffalo which prevailed’ < menang to prevail + kabau buffalo.The highland region of West Sumatra where the majority of the Minangkabau live has also been known as Minangkabau, but is not now so marked in maps and atlases.
