Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Urdu mīnār; Persian mīnār.
Etymology: < Urdu mīnār and its etymon Persian mīnār tower, minaret < Arabic manār (masculine) lighthouse and manāra (feminine) lighthouse, tower, minaret, nouns of place < nāra (see minaret n.).According to Encycl. Islam (new ed., 1993) at manār, manāra, the original sense in Arabic was ‘an elevated place where a light or beacon is established; the means of marking (with fire, originally) routes for caravans or for the army in war’; in the later sense ‘tower’, when no particular association with fire was implied, the feminine form manāra was preferred. Compare minaret n.
In South and East Asia: a tower or turret. Also: a lighthouse. Cf. minaret n.
