Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew minḥāh.
Etymology: < post-biblical Hebrew minḥāh (in biblical Hebrew ‘gift, tribute, offering, esp. meal offering; sacrifice’ (compare manna n.2), ultimately < the same Semitic base as Arabic manaḥa to give, minḥa(h) a gift or donation); the sense ‘afternoon prayer’ probably developed from the saying of such a prayer at the time previously associated with the evening sacrifice (for the origin of which practice compare 1 Kings 18:36).In quot. 1641 translating post-classical Latin Mincha.
Judaism.
The afternoon prayer service, the second of three daily services (the others being maariv (see Maariv n.) and shacharit).The term also occasionally appears in English texts, usually as part of a discussion of its literal sense and subsequent semantic development in Hebrew, as a transliterated Hebrew form rather than as a genuine English adoption. Cf. quot. 1962.
