Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin minera.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin minera mineral, ore (1129; frequently from 12th cent. in British sources; also in sense ‘mine’, frequently from 1144 in British sources; 14th cent. in alchemical sense), variant (perhaps after forms in Old French or Anglo-Norman) of post-classical Latin minaria (also minarium , mineria ) ore (1154; from 1155 in British sources), mine (10th cent.; from 1130 in British sources) < mina mine n. + -aria (compare -ary suffix1). Compare Old French miniere (c1210 in sense ‘mine’, a1525 in Middle French in sense ‘matrix of a metal’), Anglo-Norman miner, minere mineral, mine; also Spanish minera (1276), Portuguese mineira (13th cent.), Italian miniera (a1327; a1276 in form minera), Old Occitan meniera (14th cent.), all in sense ‘mine’.
Chiefly Alchemy. Now historical and rare.
The matrix in which a metal or precious stone was formerly believed to grow; the ore of a metal (see also quot. 1890). Also figurative, esp. in early use.
