Origin: A borrowing from Sioux. Etymon: Sioux mnik hóʔožu.
Etymology: < Santee and Teton Sioux mnik hóʔožu (also Teton Sioux mnikhówožu), of unknown origin (frequently interpreted by folk etymology (within Sioux) as < Santee Sioux mínikhąyewožu, lit. ‘plant(ers) near the water’).The large number of forms in the 19th cent. reflects the difficulty Europeans had in rendering the Sioux sounds in their own orthographies; those that eventually became established in English show the influence of French spelling conventions.
A member of a division of the Teton Sioux people, inhabiting the Cheyenne River area of western South Dakota. Frequently attributive, esp. in Miniconjou Sioux.
