Etymology: < French †mistigris (now mistigri ) jack of clubs, especially in certain games when accompanied by two cards of the same colour (1827), also in sense ‘cat’ (1822), and (regional) in sense ‘child, small animal’, probably < miste (now regional) sweet, pretty, charming (c1490 in Middle French; probably an alteration of mite , pet name for a cat (see mitten n.)) + gris grey (see gris adj.). Compare Pam n. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (mi·stigris) /ˈmɪstɪɡrɪs/.

Cards. Obsolete.

A joker or similar card played as a wild card in certain versions of poker; a game in which such a card is used. Also: the highest trump in certain card games.
