Origin: Of uncertain origin. Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or perhaps (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French mesconter ; mis- prefix1, count v.
Etymology: Either < Anglo-Norman and Middle French mesconter (1155 in Anglo-Norman in sense 1a, c1165 in Old French in sense 2; French se mécompter ) < mes- mis- prefix2 + conter count v., or perhaps independently < mis- prefix1 + count v. Compare Old Occitan mescomptar (1288).
