Origin: A borrowing from Bemba. Etymon: Bemba babemba.
Etymology: < Bemba babemba the Bemba people < ba- , plural class prefix denoting people + -bemba , self-designation (see Bemba n.); compare (with initial augment) ababemba , in the same sense (compare Awemba n. and the discussion at Bemba adj.).In Bemba, b (except after m ) represents a voiced bilabial fricative /β/, which is often perceived as /w/ or not heard at all by speakers of English. The forms Ba-wemba and Bawemba at β. forms perhaps arose by analogy with the names of other peoples with a cognate class prefix.
Now rare.
A Bantu-speaking people inhabiting the north-eastern part of Zambia and the neighbouring areas of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire). Now usually known as Bemba (see Bemba n. 1). Cf. Awemba n.
