Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Mithridāticus.
Etymology: < classical Latin Mithridāticus of or relating to Mithridates VI, king of Pontus, in post-classical Latin also qualifying names of remedies (1688) < Hellenistic Greek Μιθριδατικός < Μιθριδάτης (see mithridate n.) + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare Spanish mitridático (1495), French mithridatique (1544 or earlier in Middle French), Portuguese mitridático (17th cent.), Italian mitridatico (17th cent.).With Mithridatic war compare classical Latin Mithridaticum bellum , Hellenistic Greek Μιθριδατικὸς πόλεμος . With Mithridatic triumph (see quot. 1649 at sense 1) compare classical Latin triumphus Mithridaticus.
1. Of or relating to Mithridates VI, king of Pontus (see mithridate n.); esp. in Mithridatic war n. any of three wars waged by Rome against him.
