Etymology: < Middle French mictigatif, mitigatif adjective (1314 in Old French) and noun (second half of the 14th cent.) and its etymon post-classical Latin mitigativus, adjective (also mitigativum , use as noun of neuter of adjective; both 5th cent.) < classical Latin mītigāt- , past participial stem of mītigāre mitigate v. + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare Italian mitigativo (a1320), Occitan mitigatiu (14th cent.), Spanish mitigativo (1494).In plural form mitigativa after mitigativa, plural of post-classical Latin mitigativum. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (mi·tigeitiv) /ˈmɪtɪɡeɪtɪv/.
