Parasitenkunde 14 2) < the name of Victor Babeş (1854–1926), Romanian microbiologist, who first described the organisms in 1888 ( Comptes rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 107 692) + -ia -ia suffix².Scientific Latin Babesia had previously been used for a genus of Streptococcaceae ( J.
