Etymology: < classical Latin mītigātōrius, adjective < mītigāt- , past participial stem of mītigāre mitigate v. + -ōrius -ory suffix2. Compare earlier mitigator n. Compare Spanish mitigatorio , Portuguese mitigatório (1606), French †mitigatoire (1636). With use as noun compare post-classical Latin mitigatorium (1656 in the source cited in quot. 1656 at sense B., which has parallel Latin and English phrases).
