单词 minorca
释义

Minorcan.

Brit. /mᵻˈnɔːkə/, U.S. /məˈnɔrkə/
Forms: 1600s 1800s– Minorca, 1800s Menorca.
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Minorca.
Etymology: < Minorca, the name of the second largest of the Balearic islands, in the western Mediterranean (Spanish Menorca ; late 16th cent. in English in the form Minorque ; ultimately < post-classical Latin Minorca , Minorica (3rd cent. in form Menorica ) < classical Latin minor minor adj. + -ica (as in Armorica : see Armorican adj.)). Compare Majorcan n.The origin of use in sense 3 is uncertain and is apparently earliest found in English, although the breed denoted is apparently ultimately of Spanish origin. Compare:1949–52 Enciclopedia Universal Ilustrada: Suplemento Anual 1504/1 Menorca. Realmente no se sabe a qué se debe este nombre dado por los ingleses a esta raza, no siendo seguro que proceda de la isla de su nombre, si bien es indudable su origen español, por cuanto la base o el origen de ella es la castellana negra.
