Etymology: < post-classical Latin Minorita (1517) < classical Latin minor minor adj. + -īta -ite suffix1. Compare Middle French minorite (late 16th cent.).In form Minorities (plural) in quot. 1559 at sense A. 1 translating, and probably modelled after, post-classical Latin Minoritis, ablative plural of Minorita.
