Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin misereātur, miserērī.
Etymology: < classical Latin misereātur (see below), 3rd person singular present subjunctive of miserērī to have pity or mercy, ultimately < miser wretched, unfortunate (see miser adj. and n.1). Compare miserere n.
Christian Church.
(The first word of) the formula of absolution used in the Latin liturgy of the Western Church, ‘May (God) have mercy’; the recitation of this.
