Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French ballottage.
Etymology: < French ballottage (1835), spec. use of ballottage act of voting, ballot (1520 in Middle French as balotaige ) < ballotter ballot v. + -age -age suffix.
In France: the second ballot, to decide between the two candidates who have come nearest to obtaining the majority. Also, in extended use: a similar system adopted elsewhere.
