Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly; see e.g. Miocene adj. and n.
Forms: 1800s– meio-, 1800s– mio-.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek μείων.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μείων lesser, less (see meio- comb. form); compare -o- connective; earliest in Miocene adj., and frequently after this word. Compare scientific Latin mio- (in e.g. Miohippus Miohippus n.). Compare meio- comb. form.Used in combination with elements ultimately of Greek origin. The form mio- has been standardized in formations in the fields of palaeontology and geology, meio- in formations in botany and biology (see meio- comb. form). Attested from the mid 19th cent. in a few formations.
