Etymology: Earliest as myosis < post-classical Latin myosis (1768 or earlier) < ancient Greek μύειν to shut the eyes (see mystery n.¹) + -osis suffix. Compare French myosie (Boiste, 1803), myosis (1859). The spelling with -i- is apparently after German Miose, Miosis, in some cases (compare quot. 1892) reinforced by etymological confusion with meiosis n. Compare Hellenistic Greek μύσις closing of an opening (in medical writers: see Mysis n.).

Medicine.

Constriction of the pupil of the eye, as a pathological or physiological phenomenon. Cf. mydriasis n.
