单词 mirador
释义

miradorn.

Brit. /ˌmɪrəˈdɔː/, /ˈmɪrədɔː/, U.S. /ˌmɪrəˈdɔr/
Forms: 1600s– mirador, 1800s miradore.
Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish mirador.
Etymology: < Spanish mirador (1428) < Catalan mirador (c1460) < mirar to look (see mire v.2) + -ador , suffix ( < classical Latin -tōrium : see -ory suffix1); Spanish mirador is identified as a Catalan loan on grounds of its form, the normally developed Spanish form being miradero (1396). Compare Portuguese miradoiro (1141; also miradouro; later also ( < Spanish) mirador), French mirador (1830 as miradore; earlier isolated attestation in a translation from English (1787)), Italian mirador, miradore (19th cent.). N.E.D. (1906) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (miradǭ·r) /miraˈdor/.
Esp. in Spain: a turret or belvedere on top of a house, commanding an extensive view; a balcony with a panoramic view. Also (occasionally): a watchtower. Also figurative.
