Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymon: Arabic miʿrāj.
Etymology: < Arabic miʿrāj, lit. ‘ladder’ (in this context, al-miʿrāj the ascent), noun of instrument < ʿaraja to ascend.The event is now celebrated on the 27th of Rajab, the seventh month of the Islamic calendar, the eve of which is known as laylat al-miʿrāj Night of the Ascent. For further information on the origin, usage, and dating of the Arabic terms, see Encycl. Islam (new ed., 1993), s.v. miʿrāḏ. With the nocturnal journey from Mecca to Jerusalem and back (Arabic isrā' ), compare night journey n. 2. In the following quot., Arabic miʿrāj and isrā' have apparently been conflated:1697 H. Prideaux True Nature Imposture in Life Mahomet 52 In the twelfth Year of his..Mission, is placed the Mesra, that is, his famous Night-journey from Mecca to Jerusalem.

The one-night ascent of the prophet Muhammad through the seven heavens to the presence of God, following his nocturnal transportation to Jerusalem from Mecca, to which, on the same night, he was then taken back.The event is widely taken by most orthodox Muslims to have been divinely devised, but has long been the subject of diverse interpretations of the Quranic verse 17. 1.
