In European usage: (a title of) any of various prominent Maghribi rulers of the Middle Ages. From the early Islamic period Arabic amīr al-mu'minīn ‘Commander of the Faithful’ was the protocollary title of the Caliphs. In 928 this eastern title was adopted by the Hispano-Umayyad ruler ʿAbd al-Raḥman III to proclaim his status as an independent Islamic authority subject neither to the Abbasid Caliphs of Baghdad nor to the contemporary Shiite Fatimid Caliphate established in North Africa. From the mid 12th cent. the title was borne by rulers of the major dynasties of the Muslim West from the Iberian peninsula to Tunisia, notably the North African Almohads, Hafsids, and Marīnids and the Moroccan successors of the latter from the end of the 14th cent. onwards.
