Etymology: < mis- prefix1 + feed n.
A failure or irregularity in the feeding of a machine or mechanism, esp. a printer or copier (with paper) or an automatic weapon (with ammunition).

1962 Gloss. Terms Automatic Data Processing (B.S.I.) 91 Misfeed, the failure of a punched card to pass through a machine in the manner specified.
1983 Daily Tel. 14 Sept. 7/3 (advt.) The input copy ordering information is electronically memorised for automatic recall in case of misfeeds or other stoppages.
1986 Handgunner Aug. 53/1 One round had been nose-mangled on a misfeed and was not fired.
1991 Personal Computer World Feb. 164/1 The main problem was that, for the first few attempts, I was unsure whether I'd got it right and felt that forcing it any further might damage it: as a result, I had many paper misfeeds.
