Etymology: < Assamese Miri, apparently originally designating the hill-dwelling Miris, of uncertain origin.The name apparently continued to be used in Assamese and English for the hill people after they had settled on the plains; it is considered offensive by the peoples themselves. The hill Miris' self-designation is Nishi ; the plain-dwellers call themselves Mishing : compare G. A. Grierson Ling. Surv. India III. (1909) i. 584 and quot. 1981 at sense A. 1.
