单词 missible
释义

missibleadj.

Brit. /ˈmɪsᵻbl/, U.S. /ˈmɪsəb(ə)l/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin miss- , mittere , -ible suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin miss-, past participial stem of mittere to send, throw or cast a weapon (see mission n.) + -ible suffix, perhaps after post-classical Latin missibilis suitable for throwing (5th cent. as a variant reading for missilis (see missile n. and adj.); earlier (Vetus Latina) as noun denoting a weapon). Compare Middle French missible (c1434 in phrase lettres missibles (compare missive adj.); c1500 in sense 1).
