Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: -in suffix1, -ine suffix5.
Etymology: Variant of -in suffix1 and -ine suffix5, originally after French -éine (in e.g. orcéine orcein n., phlorizéine phlorizein n.).
Variants of -in suffix1 and -ine suffix5 used as suffixes in the names of certain chemical compounds containing anhydrides, esp. phthalic anhydride. In bases the ending is usually -eine, and in non-bases -ein.
